Khalid Al Khajah

Khalid Al Khajah is an Edinburgh-based electronic R&B artist from Bahrain whose music contains elements of jazz and neo-soul. In January 2017 he released his debut EP, 'Open', a dark and soulful collection of songs that has been well received in the Scottish music scene. At the Edinburgh MELA Khalid will be performing a mixed set of original material and covers accompanied by Edinburgh-based guitarist Daniel Abrahams.

Sankofa BeatsSankofa Beats is a collective of Edinburgh based musicians, dancers and singers who all have a passion for African dance and melodies. They fuse dance traditions learnt on their travels across the continent to create exciting new choreographies – high energy djembe dances, rhythmic gumboot, mesmerising belly dances and more. The group is a true melting pot of cultures, with members coming from America, Ghana, Spain, Kenya, Scotland and Siberia. The international flavour of the group highlights its belief in Wontanara – a West African saying which means ‘we are one’!

Edinburgh Chinese Arts Association: 14:15 – 14:45

Edinburgh Chinese Arts AssociationEdinburgh Chinese Arts Association (ECAA) is a voluntary, non-profit, independent arts association founded in 2013, to improve the Edinburgh Chinese community’s artistic pursuits, creating a platform display their talents. ECCA have participated in the Edinburgh Mela, Edinburgh festival carnival, Chinese New Year and many local events, successfully organising a charity show in Nov 2016 to raise money for Breast Cancer Care Scotland. They are the first Chinese dance group to have been invited to 24th Edinburgh International Folk Festival in July 2017.

Bruce Ncube: 15:00 – 15:30

Community Choir Workshop with Bruce NcubeBruce Ncube of Mema Arts specialises in teaching songs and harmonies from his native country Zimbabwe. Bruce lives in Scotland and has been traveling all over the UK since 2006 teaching and performing at festivals, schools and choirs. The songs that he teaches are emotionally charged, uplifting and confidence building. His workshops are participatory and inclusive and one does not need to be experienced to take part.

Rameet SandhuRameet Sandhu, Miss India Scotland, is 22 years old and raised in Scotland. She recently signed with Bollywood’s biggest record label ‘T-Series’ and released her latest song ‘Talli Hogiya’ featuring Curtis Young and Dr Zeus which was a huge success. Rameet also made her entry into the Punjabi cinema this year in a leading role in the film ‘Mahi NRI’.

India Flamenco: 18.15 – 18.25

India-FlamencoIndia Flamenco have been a huge success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and we are excited to present them at the Mela. Their show fuses the dance styles of three cultures, from classical Indian dance via belly dance to flamenco, a story that has its roots in a thousand year old journey across continents.

Film ‘The Lunchbox’: 18:40 onwards

Lunchbox PosterUnhappy housewife Ila (Nimrat Kaur) tries adding some spice to her stale marriage by preparing a special lunch for her emotionally indifferent husband. But his lunchbox goes astray and end up in the hands of Saajan (Bollywood star, Irrfan Khan), an ill-tempered widower. Persistent Ila adds a note to the next day’s delivery, and so begins an unusual romance, where Saajan and Ila talk about their joys and sorrows without ever meeting in person. Set in Mumbai, the film was a huge success in India and worldwide, winning numerous international accolades.
